Help Save-A-Pet Celebrate National Pet Day By Adopting a Rescue

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - March 25, 2013 - PRLog -- (Port Jefferson Station, NY) — In honor of our nation’s love of pets, April 11 has been named “National Pet Day.”  While more than 60 percent of households have pets, Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. (http://www.saveapetli.net/) wants the public to realize how many millions of other companion animals (http://www.saveapetli.net/adoption-testimonials.php) are still homeless in shelters (http://www.saveapetli.net/history.php) across the country.

“It’s wonderful to have a nationally recognized day in honor of our pets (http://www.saveapetli.net/adoption-testimonials.php),” says Save-A-Pet Founder/President Dori Scofield.  “But the sad truth is that so many pets are still suffering and in dire need of a home and loving family.  This National Pet Day, we want the public to not only think about their own pets, but consider what they can do to help orphaned companion animals housed in shelters across the country.”

To that end, Save-A-Pet and its staff recommends adopting a rescued pet from a shelter, as opposed to purchasing one from a store or a breeder.  Another way to show your support is to make a donation (http://www.saveapetli.net/donate-long-island-animal-shelt...) or volunteer (http://www.saveapetli.net/volunteer-animal-shelter-li.php) at a shelter in your area.

“While Save-A-Pet is a no-kill shelter, more than three million dogs and cats are euthanized every year because the shelters are overcrowded,” continued Ms. Scofield.  “There are so many irresponsible breeders and puppy mills across the country.  By adopting a pet, rather than purchasing one, you are helping to save lives.”

Every year, more than seven million pets are surrendered to shelters across the nation.  This past year, due to the current economic climate and the effects of Hurricane Sandy, Save-A-Pet has taken in more animals than ever before, as their owners can no longer afford to care for them.

“It’s heartbreaking,” says Ms. Scofield.  “So many of the dogs and cats in our shelter were someone’s pet.  They are used to that lifestyle and it’s hard for them to adjust to shelter life.  We have so many wonderful dogs (http://www.saveapetli.net/dogs-adoption-cats-pets-long-is...) and cats (http://www.saveapetli.net/dogs-adoption-cats-pets-long-island/cats.php) that are available for adoption that would make terrific pets, because they were terrific pets.”

Save-A-Pet urges the public to come by the shelter to see the many companion animals that are available for adoption (http://www.saveapetli.net/dogs-adoption-cats-pets-long-island/dogs.php) this National Pet Day.  If you cannot adopt a pet at this time, please consider volunteering or making a donation to the shelter.  For more information, please contact Save-A-Pet at (631) 473-6333 or visit www.saveapetli.org.
