CHARLESTON, S.C. - March 25, 2013 - PRLog -- Issues of male factor infertility represent approximately 30-50% of infertility cases.  It is therefore important when a couple is struggling to conceive, that the male partner undergo evaluations as well as the female partner.  At The Fertility Center of Charleston, the male's evaluations can be conducted at the same time as those of the female and include a thorough history and semen analysis.  The semen analysis determines all of the basic semen parameters to include concentration, motility and evaluation of sperm shape (morphology).  States Dr. Stephanie Singleton of The Fertility Center of Charleston, "Treatment options for male factor infertility range from intrauterine insemination (IUI) for mild cases to in vitro fertilization with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF with ICSI) for more severe cases."

IVF with ICSI is beneficial for those cases of severe male factor infertility because it can create embryos from fewer sperm.  This form of treatment is also effective for those men with no sperm in the ejaculate (azoospermia) which can occur naturally or resulting from a vasectomy.   In those cases, often small numbers of sperm can be obtained with the assistance of the urologist to allow for IVF and ICSI.  With IVF and ICSI only small sperm numbers are needed, as one sperm is injected into each egg that the female partner creates.  The sperm are assisted in entering the eggs although fertilization still occurs naturally.  Embryos are created which can then be transferred into the uterus for implantation and hopefully the baby journey begins.

The exceptional clinical team from The Fertility of Charleston combines andrology,  urology, endocrinology, and embryology  to provide a variety of treatment methods allowing for  great success in treating male factor infertility including low sperm count, low sperm motility, and even many men with no sperm in the ejaculate (azoospermia).

At The Fertility Center of Charleston, the mission is to compassionately guide the patients to parenthood using the most advanced reproductive technologies available today.
