LONDON - March 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Year of The Vegan

2013 is clearly the year of the vegan. The Vegan Society report vegan pledges on it’s website are up by 40%. The biggest loser doesn’t seem to be The UK Vegetarian Society as they too report hits on their websites are seeing a 40% increase. Vegfest UK have kicked off 2013 vegan festival season with a 50% surge in visitors at Vegfest Brighton, up from 5,000 visitors in 2012 to 7,500 this year. Vegfest are also seeing a massive increase in traffic on facebook and views of Vegfest  videos on Youtube. Major Vegfest UK sponsor, meat free Fry’s , report sales already up 30% this year. No doubt News Corporation’s UK bestseller The Sun newspaper may claim ‘It’s The Sun wot won it’ following numerous pages of coverage on the Vegan diet including half a page feature of The UK Vegan Society’s CEO Jasmijn de Boo. Vegan diets were discussed on This Morning TV after activists from around the world branded themselves like cattle with branding irons in support of the vegan 269 campaign.

Vegan Diet Never Easier

Ocado the internet based online Supermarket currently in talks with Morrison’s has an extensive range of vegan products including dairy free, vegan desserts such as chocolate cakes , cookies, brownies and a selection of vegan ice creams. This year the shelves are full of new Dairy free vegan Easter eggs and new gourmet vegan chocolates are appearing almost weekly. Vegan Chocolate pioneers, Plamil Foods based in Folkestone, Kent , have seen a ‘phenomenal’ spike in demand, not just in the UK but from all over the world. “Interest in veganism is definitely an international, global trend , we are sending pallets of vegan chocolate all over the world” says Plamil M.D. Adrian Ling.

Is Dairy The Biggest Loser?

Whereas once you would only see UHT Soy milk on the supermarket shelves now there is a plethora of dairy free milk alternatives. As people switch from milk to healthier plant based alternatives the choice gets bigger all the time. Coconut milk, almond milk, oat milk, hemp milk, hazelnut milk, rice milk and usually with 3 versions, sweetened, unsweetened and chocolate flavoured.  Supermarkets all sell their own brand soy milk and Tescos have a whole range of vegan dairy free options including lunch box chocolate soy milk minis, hard vegan cheeses and vegan cream cheese.  Some of the new gourmet vegan cheeses such as those made by Swiss company Vegusto and the vegan blue cheese from Redwood’s Wholefoods deserve a place on any cheeseboard in any restaurant. There are numerous vegan cheeses that melt and taste just like their saturated animal fat laden counterparts and are otherwise undetectably different on Pizzas. It’s now only a matter of time before Dominos Pizza, Yum’s Pizza Hut or Pizza Express have vegan pizzas as standard on their menus.

Something Fishy About Vegetarians

Despite The UK Vegetarian Society’s best efforts to vegducate people about the fact that Vegetarians don’t eat fish, do eat chicken eggs, don’t eat fish eggs and may or may not wear leather, fish has remained a bone of contention with UK caterers. The more consistent approach of those on a vegan diet has been rewarded with a whole range of fish free fish products. Vegan caviar can now be bought in Ikea and Vegfest UK sponsors Redwood Wholefoods now have a whole range of new vegan recipes for fish alternatives including vegan fish fingers, smoked salmon, tuna, scampi with vegan  prawns and lobster on the way. Ironically a few vegans don’t like the products because they taste so realistic.

Vegan Future Is Inevitable

Vegan author and Plantarian cook Tony Bishop-Weston says “A predominantly vegan future is inevitable, we don’t have enough land, energy, water and clean air to be anything else.  The vegan recipes for survival are now being heralded by some of the world’s most powerful people, such as Bill Gates and Biz Stone, who now predict fast food companies such as McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Subway could have to turn to plant based meats if they want to continue to make good profit.” Tony says “The body of studies and research are now stacking up in support of the logical, sustainable, health arguments that are the backbone of a healthy vegan lifestyle”
