BRADENTON, Fla. - March 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Cox Auto of Bradenton, Florida (http://www.coxchevy.com/our-story/) recently donated 70 mobile phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers, which is a non-profit organization that strives to provide free communication services to veterans and active duty military members. Cox Auto is proud to help reduce communication challenges for veterans and members of the military. Their contributions are a part of their commitment to give back to the community and the country.

The organization does not actually send many cell phones to soldiers, since most of the phones received through donations are not GSM enabled and would not work overseas. The donated phones are either sold to a company that recycles them or are refurbished and sold to new users. The money received through recycling and refurbishing is utilized to buy calling cards and free phone service for military personnel. The organization also accepts monetary donations to help with their efforts. Some newer phones that are GSM enabled are received from corporate donors, and these are subject to strict security inspections before they are sent to troops overseas.

Cell Phones for Soldiers is a family-run not-for-profit association that is run by the Bergquist family of Norwell, Massachusetts. Since its inception in 2004, it has provided over 181 million minutes of no-charge talk time for military members. They mail about 12,000 calling cards each week so that members of the military can keep in contact with their families while deployed. The organization has recycled almost 11 million mobile phones since 2004, which reduces the addition to landfills. In 2012, the organization developed Helping Heroes Home, which provides emergency funding for veterans returning home after deployment, and also assists with the physical and emotional issues many veterans experience when transitioning back to civilian life.

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded in 2004 by a brother and sister, aged just 12 and 13 years old. Brittany and Robbie Bergquist and their family still operate this organization today. The siblings have received much recognition for their efforts over the years.
