March 23, 2013 - PRLog -- At 8.30pm this evening, South Bank, London’s cultural quarter, plunged into darkness to support WWF’s Earth Hour, a unique annual phenomenon where hundreds of millions of people around the world turn off their lights for one hour on the same night, to show commitment to protect our planet.

Over 10 major landmarks and organisations in South Bank took part:

• Oxo Tower switched off the lights which usually illuminate the famous red OXO windows
EDF Energy London Eye dimmed its lights in line with Civil Aviation Authority guidelines
National Theatre switched off the iconic coloured lights on its fly towers
Southbank Centre dimmed external lights across its 21 acre site
OXO Tower Restaurant, Bar and Brasserie switched off 50% of lighting, and guests enjoyed a candle lit atmosphere exposing the iconic London skyline
BFI IMAX switched off the external lights of its huge, cylindrical building
Park Plaza County Hall switched off external lights, and used candlelight to light up the check-in desk, bar and restaurant where an Earth Hour Cocktail Menu and an organic Earth Hour Set Menu was served, and Park Plaza Westminster Bridge and Park Plaza Riverbank switched off external lights off too
The Old Vic switched off the external lights of its grand theatre on The Cut
Shell Centre switched off the internal and external lights in their prominent tower next to the Southbank Centre
ITV London Studios switched off all non essential lights in their prominent riverside tower
Ernst & Young at Becket House switched off all of their non-essential lighting
• • • WWF’s Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses joined in.   In the UK last year, over 7.6 million people got involved across 152 countries, joining 3,500 schools and more than 1,200 businesses and organisations.
