Four Simple Steps to a Beautiful Lawn in 2013.

There are four simple steps that you can do early this spring to promote a lush, healthy, green lawn.  There’s also an exact window of time when doing these steps will give you the biggest benefits. Knowing what to do and when to do it is the key to success when it comes to creating a beautiful lawn.

Tom Norton from Lawn Doctor of Hanover, MA offers the following tips for the do-it-yourselfer.

1.     Remove branches and debris from lawn as soon as possible. After the heavy, wet snow and whipping winds of this stormy winter, the level of tree damage and lawn debris is much more than in past years.  As your lawn starts to creep out of winter dormancy it’s important that anything on the lawn be removed.  Otherwise, you'll find yourself with dead spots and a spot seeding project on your “to do” list.

2.     Apply fertilizer.  Once the soil temperatures reach the low 40's, which normally happens in March, cool season grasses will start to grow.  An early fertilization provides the nutrients needed for healthier and more resistant grass plants.

3.     Apply Crabgrass Control. If you want to prevent crabgrass from infesting your lawn you should apply these treatments early.  Most of the granular applications require moisture and time (a couple of weeks) for the active ingredient to seep into the soil. Crabgrass seed can germinate quite early in sunny spots or if we get unseasonably warm temps. The effectiveness of the product depends on the soil being fully immersed with the prevention product prior to any opportunity for germination.

4.     Get seed in the ground early.  If you need to do any seeding this spring get it in the ground as soon as you can.  The window for seeding in the spring is quite small and the sooner the better.  The biggest reason for this is so that weed control can be applied later in the spring without it affecting the new grass plants.  We recommend using a seed that germinates quickly such as perennial ryegrass.  The process of germination can be slow when temperatures are cool so planting early allows the seed to go through the initial steps of the process and be ready to sprout as soon the temperatures rise.
