Sea Kayaking season in Scotland to start

Even though the snow in the Scottish hills is still falling the sea kayaking season is about to start.

March 20, 2013 - PRLog -- The days are getting longer and next week the clocks are going forward again. This is a time when people start thinking about their holidays. This year it might be another adventure in the Scottish Highlands.
Unexplored Scotland is bracing itself for the start of the season. A new minibus is ordered, the sea kayaks are out of winter storage and cleaned and the winter kit is packed away. "This season will be very interesting" says Andreas the head instructor. The company is going to run the usual sea kayaking trips in Skye (http://www.unexploredscotland.com/sea-kayaking-scotland/sea-kayaking-skye) along with trips at the Summer Isles and in Knoydart. Additionally there might be a 2 week kayaking trip along the Scottish Sea Kayak Trail. This would be the first one of that length in Scotland (http://www.unexploredscotland.com/sea-kayaking-scotland/scottish-sea-kayak-trail).  This tour will take people almost 300km (190miles) all the way from Oban to Portree in Skye. You will stop by at the Isle of Mull, Arisaig, Mallaig, Knoydart and Plockton area. The tour isn’t quite the same as the recommended Scottish Sea Kayak Trail but this is just to improve it. For example you will spend a night at Inverie campsite. This is a beautiful spot which is surrounded by mountains and with a grand view out to the sea.

The Skye trips are as usually divided in a 2 and a 5 day trip. The 2 day trips are short wild camping trips at the magnificent Skye coastline. You may be able to see the Cuillin ridge or if you are really lucky some exiting wildlife like porpoises, otters and dolphins. Seals are pretty common along the coast. On the 5 day sea kayaking trip you should be able to cover some 100km and get a much better chance to see wildlife. “On a trip last year we spotted hundreds of seals, several groups of porpoises, some otters, a dolphin and a young basking shark.” This is about as exciting as it can get in the wilds.

The 5 day expedition to Knoydart will take groups to the remote place of Sourlies where you will find just a remote bothy and not much more. There the groups will go hillwalking for 2 days and paddling to Inverie for the last evening to the Old Forge, the most remote pub in Mainland UK. Loch Nevis where most of the paddle tour is, is home to a lot of seals and porpoises too.  The trip will end on the last day where it started, in the small harbour town of Mallaig.

It will hardly get more exciting than this. Scotland is one of the best places in Europe to see marine wildlife and has some of the most magnificent coastlines. The people in this northern country are friendly and has some of the most remote wilderness areas anywhere in Europe. You could walk or paddle for a day without seeing a soul.
