Mazda Earns a Top Safety Pick+ Designation on the 2014 Mazda6

The Insurance Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recognizes the Mazda6 as a great choice for safety conscious buyers.

TINLEY PARK, Ill. - March 14, 2013 - PRLog -- Community Mazda in Tinley Park (http://www.communitymazda.com/home) is pleased to announce that the 2014 Mazda6 has earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. With a brand new design, the Mazda6 sedan carries over its fantastic reputation for safety to another model year. The award helps to distinguish the Mazda6 as a great choice for drivers and families looking for a safe vehicle.

Mazda President and CEO Jim O'Sullivan addressed Mazda's reputation for safety after the announcement of the award. "Receiving a 'Top Safety Pick+' ranking from IIHS demonstrates Mazda's continued dedication to creating products that offer the highest levels of occupant crash protection combined with being fun to drive.”

The IIHS recently added a new, small partial overlap crash test to its procedural testing. Typically considered more hazardous than a full on front crash, a small overlap crash only involves a front corner of the vehicle, such as when a pole, a tree, or the edge of another vehicle is hit. The Mazda6 proved that it was able to keep passengers safe in a crash of this type by redistributing crash energy and keeping the passenger cabin relatively intact.

The 2014 Mazda6 also marks the debut of new technologies in Mazda's SKYACTIV technology suite. The SKYACTIV-body is composed of 58% high-tensile steel, making it simultaneously lighter and stronger than before, lending the Mazda6 better safety and better handling.

Besides its reactionary safety equipment, such as its reinforced frame and set of advance airbags, the Mazda6 is equipped with some of today's most advanced active safety features (http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/displayPage.action?pagePa...).

These include:

•          Anti-lock brakes with brake force distribution

•         Dynamic stability control

•         Roll stability control

•         Rear cross traffic alert

•         A blind spot monitoring system
