March 11, 2013 - PRLog -- About 1.5 million people in the United States experience significant tissue damage, organ failure, disability and death due to lupus. Allsup, a nationwide provider of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) (https://www.allsup.com/about-ssdi/ssdi-overview.aspx) representation and Medicare plan selection services, is raising awareness of the autoimmune disease by sponsoring the Lupus Foundation of America’s Help Us Solve the Cruel Mystery™ tour, which arrives in Richmond next weekend.

Allsup experts will be available to answer questions about SSDI and provide eligibility screenings (https://www.allsup.com/about-ssdi/free-ssdi-evaluation.aspx?sessioncode=1239) during the “Lupus: Learning and Living” program from 1 to 4 p.m. at Virginia Commonwealth University, Saturday, March 16, 2013. The program is free, and registration is requested at http://learningandlivingva.eventbrite.com/#.

The Lupus Foundation of America estimates 1.5 million Americans have the disease. Of those, 90 percent of patients are women. Some forms of lupus, however, such as discoid lupus and drug-induced lupus are more frequent in males.

Anyone can get lupus, but African-American women are three times more likely to get lupus than Caucasian women. Lupus is also more common in Latina, Asian and Native American women. People are usually diagnosed with lupus as they enter the workforce, or during their prime income-earning years, between the ages of 15-44.

People who can no longer work because of lupus may be eligible for the SSDI benefits they paid for through their FICA taxes while working. Many are denied benefits because of a lack of understanding and awareness of the disease, as well as the subjective nature of some of its painful symptoms.

“Working with individuals with lupus, we see first hand the challenges they face in everything from being diagnosed to communicating the severity of how lupus affects them,” said Tai Venuti, Allsup’s manager of Strategic Alliances. “People who can’t continue working must deal with their disease, as well as the emotional, psychological and financial impacts of not being able to work.”

The national Help Us Solve the Cruel Mystery™ tour addresses this significant public health issue and features a 45-foot purple bus covered in lupus facts and eight interactive exhibits. It will travel to various Richmond area locations March 15-17. A complete list of tour dates and locations is available at CruelMystery.com.
