Preparing for an Ultramarathon in Freiburg

If you are planning on long runs in 2013, start your season with the FREIBURG MARATHON
By: Freiburg Marathon

FREIBURG, Germany - March 11, 2013 - PRLog -- Ultra runs are currently in vogue, there is no question about it. Marathons can already be counted as a standard discipline for many runners … an important occasion to see how fit a runner is, as well as a great opportunity to meet people with the same ambitions.
The FREIBURG MARATHON 2013 is again such a “meet-and-greet” of ultra-runners, as there is an extremely active and sports-mad community in the city and its surrounding area.

Visiting friends nearby
When it comes to ultra runs and ultra-trails, in particular, the neighbouring France is still ahead of the German running scene; especially regarding the running culture and the amount of events. Basically the whole year, you can run with chip and bib through or over different hills, mountains and forests. Similar conditions can be found in adjacent Switzerland, where the mountain race is almost considered a natural way of locomotion. No wonder that long-distance runners of the area, regardless of their nationality and native language, use the FREIBURG MARATHON as meeting place and opportunity to get in shape for the upcoming season.
Furthermore, successfully finishing the FREIBURG MARATHON makes runners want more expe-riences like this during the season, as the first hurdle is overcome and the ultramarathons of the region are more alluring than ever.

Quod erat demonstrandum
There are several examples that prove the close connection between FREIBURG MARATHON and the distances over the classic 42.195 kilometers; for instance, the flagship of this region’s run-ning sport, Max Frei: from cross country running to city races, and finally from winning a city marathon to winning an ultra-trail run. There are many reasons for this success story, for ex-ample health aspects – Max Frei: “Long-distance mountain races and trail running can be less strain for the body than training on a flat surface. Since basically every step is different, the strain is gentler for the body in comparison to the same movement again and again on flat surfaces.”
In 2005 and 2006, Max Frei won the FREIBURG MARATHON. But there are also more recent examples: In 2012, the Swiss Denise Zimmermann won the event – an experienced, as well as successful ultra-runner, who had already won several races beyond the marathon distance … among others the famous 1oo km of Biel, approximately two months after her triumph in Frei-burg.
“I rest my case”, you might want to say. The Jubilee marathon in Freiburg is prone to be a successful start into the ultra-run season 2013!
