Follow on Google News | IND Students to Host and Visit Austrian StudentsThe Institute of Notre Dame (IND), the oldest Catholic girls school in Baltimore, is preparing for the arrival of 11 Austrian students for a cross-cultural experience. On March 28,13 IND students will visit the Austrian school, returning on April 7.
“The number of students requesting to visit IND was much larger than last year,” says IND President Dr. Mary Funke, who began orchestrating the trip last fall. “This year 26 girls wanted to come, which was more than we could handle. Plus there are 16 boys along on this trip.” As a result, the Austrian students will be hosted by four Catholic area high schools in addition to IND: Archbishop Curley, Calvert Hall, Mercy and The Catholic High School. IND will receive the largest group of visitors at 11. The Austrian students live with IND host families for 10 days from March 8 to March 18. Most of their time is spent observing an American school and practicing their English language skills, which they have been learning since kindergarten. Some of the non-academic highlights of the trip include walking alongside their host sisters in Baltimore’s St. Patrick’s Day parade on March 10 and a trip to Washington, D.C. with the entire group on March 16. After their visit to Baltimore, the students will tour New York for several days, focusing on Ellis Island and the United Nations, before returning home to Austria on March 21. One week later, 13 IND students take off on a reciprocal visit to Austria. They leave on Holy Thursday, March 28, and return on Sunday, April 7. Like the Austrian exchange students, the IND students will visit the Friesgasse School to experience an international school. The IND-Austrian visit coincides with the Friesgasse’s school’s break, so the girls will have time to both observe school and sightsee. In Austria, the students will experience St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Schönbrunn Palace, “The Magic Flute” at the Viennese Opera, the fortress-turned- One of last year’s visitors, Miss Stefanie “Steffi” Panzenberger, enjoyed her trip to the U.S. so much she returned to work at IND as an intern for more than two months beginning October 2012.
