Woman Imam to lead Muslim Prayer Service Commemorating International Women's Day
Muslims for Progressive (MPV) announces Imam Pamela Taylor will lead the prayers in observance of International Women's Day, March 8th 2013.
International Women's Day was fist observed on March 8, 1911 and has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries alike.
“This will be a unique event in the local Muslim community as MPV’s Friday service will be led by a female imam,” says Frank Parmir, Director of MPV-Columbus’
Imam Taylor says: "In the Muslim world, women are facing severe legal, social, and individual hardships. While there are many ways to address these problems, we believe that any lasting solution will have to include a theological challenge to discriminatory readings of the Qur’an. My sermon will look at some of the verses that affirm women’s equality, and offer a more egalitarian understanding of some of the verses that have been used to oppress women.”
