Feb. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- Jewish Child & Family Services (JCFS), a premier nonprofit dedicated to providing mental health, developmental disability, special education and other services to thousands of children, adults and families each year, today announced the recipients of its annual awards: Thomas A. Korman will receive the Irving B. Harris Leadership Award, which bestows the agency’s highest honor for outstanding leadership and a commitment to improving the lives of adults, children and families. The North Shore Auxiliary (NSA) will receive the What’s Possible Award, which recognizes those who have shown exceptional resilience, overcoming life’s obstacles to achieve personal and professional success.
As past President of JCFS, Korman was instrumental in the Jewish Children’s Bureau/JCFS merger and remains an active JCFS honorary board member.  He is a partner with Gould & Ratner law firm, has worked in the business, financial, and tax planning field for more than 30 years and is also a Certified Public Accountant.  Korman originally connected with JCFS decades ago when building his own family by becoming a foster parent.  He and his wife, Marcia, have been foster parents to over 30 children in addition to having two of their own.  Korman says, “I like that I can bring a history of experience and knowledge of the foster care community that makes a difference in discussions today.”

Since their founding in 1919, the North Shore Auxiliary has supported a variety of JCFS programs through multiple events each year.  The dedicated volunteer members of the North Shore Auxiliary take pride in funding programs that improve the lives of challenged young people and their families. These many programs include a therapeutic day school for children with learning, behavioral and emotional difficulties; respite care; staff development; as well as a wide range of other support services. “It is an honor to be recognized by JCFS for the work that our board does to support the programs that are so needed,” says Lori Lavin, President of NSA.

JCFS will formally present these awards at its annual fundraiser, A Striking Event, at Pinstripes, 1150 Willow Road, Northbrook, on Sunday, June 23, 2012 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. The fundraiser will raise money to provide services for everyone JCFS serves and will celebrate outstanding individuals who have dedicated themselves to the agency.
