Hiwassee College Out Front: Reducing Tuition by $6,000 Per Year

Hiwassee College is increasing access to a private college education by decreasing its cost of attendance by $6,000. Now, it is possible for everyone to afford a small and safe, Christian-based college located at the base of the Smoky Mountains.

Feb. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- Madisonville, TN – At a time when the price to attend college is increasing by an average rate of 20 percent every four years, the Board of Trustees at Hiwassee College in Madisonville, Tennessee has taken the bold step to reduce its cost of attendance by $6,000 per year which equals $24,000 for a baccalaureate degree.  Families from across the country will now have a greater opportunity to provide their children with a private, four-year degree at a small and safe, Christian-based college located at the base of the Smoky Mountains.

In an interview, Board of Trustees Chairman, Karl Jordan, stated, “The Hiwassee College Board of Trustees understands how families across the country have been struggling.  This action by the Board will help to make the dream of attending a private college accessible to every student regardless of their financial situation.”

Beginning with the Fall Semester of 2013, the tuition and fee rate for students at Hiwassee College will be $13,320 per year regardless of what state they call home.  The College has also reduced their room and board rate to $6,320 dollars annually.  A residential student could now attend Hiwassee College for $19,640 per year including tuition, fees, room & board, a savings of $24,000 over four years.

According to Businessweek, the delinquency rate on student loans stands at an all-time high.  By reducing the cost of attendance, Hiwassee College gives more students the opportunity to graduate with as little student loan debt as possible.  Dr. Robin J. Tricoli, President of Hiwassee College, said, “Student debt burden falls heaviest on students from middle-income families.  These families earn slightly too much money to qualify for financial aid benefits but not enough to afford the rising cost of a quality college education.  For many middle-income students, loans are the only form of student aid available.  Lowering our student’s debt burden is part of the College’s mission and strategic plan, and we believe this is a very responsible action for us to take.”

“Hiwassee College is in the business of developing the whole student - mind, body and spirit,” indicated President Tricoli.  “We offer a personalized educational experience with low student-to-faculty ratios on a safe, secure, and beautiful 400 acre campus.  And now we offer all this at a cost equal to or lower than most other public and private colleges across the country.”
