A pre-cleaned surface can have a disinfectant applied by hand sprayer, pump sprayer, sponge, rag, or by the use of “mist” machines that spray small droplets out onto surfaces in a fine fist. The mist method is a very fast and efficient way to disinfect surfaces like locker rooms, school desks, classrooms, etc.

What most people do not know is that for the disinfectant to work, there is a period of time that the disinfectant must remain on the surface for it to perform to its label description - this time is called dwell time, and typically is anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes after the disinfectant is applied to a surface.

To sum up, to disinfect properly use a hospital grade disinfectant typically a water based one, pre-clean all non-porous surfaces, porous surfaces like carpet/fabrics cannot be guaranteed to be disinfected, apply the disinfectant, let sit for its dwell time, then final wipe the surfaces if necessary to remove any residues. Use a “mist” machine if disinfecting large areas like locker rooms or gyms.
