New World Distribution signs AlaskaLand

Feb. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- “AlaskaLand” tells the story of Chukwuma, an Alaskan-raised Nigerian struggling to balance the expectations of his traditional Nigerian parents and the larger world around him. After his parents are killed in a tragic car crash, Chukwuma is separated from his younger sister, Chidinma, who moves to Nigeria with their Uncle until she becomes of legal age.

After two years the siblings reconnect to find their estrangement has created new personal and cultural frictions in ways that bring them closer to each other and their roots, as well as help them define what it means to be a Nigerian in Alaska.

Producer Chinonye Chukwu shared with us that “It [AlaskaLand] was inspired by real-life emotions, and things that I've observed, things that I've heard about, but very few events in the film are things that I've experienced...”

“Part of Chukwuma's conflict is that he's trying to appease some of his black American male friends, trying to live up to the image of being a black-American male. And even for myself as a child, and even into high school, it wasn't cool for my mother to show up at school wearing traditional Nigerian attire and bringing me Joll of rice, you know? I just wanted burger and fries.”

Chinonye Chukwu has screened her film “AlaskaLand” at Chicago, Montreal, Trenton and Martha’s Vineyard film festivals.
