Feb. 15, 2013 - PRLog -- The New New Internet published two stories this week related to biometrics and mobility.

The first looked at a new $3 million DoD contract with AOptix and CACI International to develop a biometric mobile device attachment that would permit soldiers in the field to record facial features and iris scans from long distances.

According to the story, the biometry device will come as an accessory that will wrap around an existing phone to add the new capabilities.

A smartphone using the sensing device would weigh under a pound and only need one hand to operate.

In related news, DARPA is looking for ways to develop behavioral biometrics to better the security on mobile devices.

The agency has solicited work for the Active Authentication Program which is meant to look for ways to use the habits of individuals who use the devices as an online fingerprint and identity check.

“We have received a large number of really creative approaches to the desktop security problem,” said Richard Guidorizzi, DARPA program manager. “We are looking to tap into some more of this creativity to create truly robust solutions for DoD mobile platforms.”

The agency wants to help warfighters have devices they need to download software, reports, maps, mission-specific software and receive orders in the field.
