-- Kava beverages have been brewed for centuries and have developed a reputation for treating various conditions, such as insomnia, social anxiety, arthritis, chronic pain, plus other ailments. Kava improves the quality of my sleep and makes me feel well rested and energetic the next morning. I tried it for the first time in grad school by smoking it at a bar with a guy who sold it, but it wasn't very strong. I obtained the most benefits and felt the strongest effects only after making tea with it, and from that point on I knew I wanted more. I would view it as all natural herb that I can use as an alternative to melatonin. At first when drinking, I can feel a pleasant numbing sensation of the roof of my mouth, following by a warm mellow feeling in the head. I used to buy kava root powder online and make tea by adding boiling water to it. However, I eventually learned that heating is ill-advised, as it destroys many beneficial kavalactones. Nevertheless, I would still feel a great deal of the effects and it allowed me to stay sound asleep the entire night. I stopped buying for a while due to not finding decent prices, but after moving to Austin, I would frequently purchase packages of Yogi kava tea bags at Whole Foods. It would always be helpful on Sunday nights, when I wanted to relax and crash early in the night to feel energized in the morning before work.

. I have mixed King Kava powder with water and filtered through a coffee filter, but the best extraction occurs when mixing the powder in a fat soluble substance, so I prefer to use coconut milk. I like to stir it every few minutes while letting it sit in the fridge for half an hour, then drink.
