Schools and Day Care Centers are at increasing risk of having bed bugs brought into their facility.  This is simply because bed bugs can be effective hitchhikers and ride on clothing, blankets, backpacks and coats into the school / center.
Here are some tips to reduce your risk:
•   Know what to look for, bed bugs are often mistaken for ticks or small roaches
•   Try to keep personal belongings separate as much as possible; Store coats in individual lockers or cubbies.
•   Limit cloth materials being brought into the facility; this may include blankets, stuffed animals, and backpacks.
If you find a bed bug on a student or on clothing:
•   Remove the bed bug and spray it with 90% isopropyl alcohol solution (rubbing alcohol).  Bed bugs will perish when directly sprayed with rubbing alcohol.
•   It is not advised to send a child home or prevent them from coming to school / day care due to the length of time treatment takes.

Each facility will have to create guidelines based on their individual situation.  It is better to know the risk and be proactive than to wait for an infestation to occur to take action.
