Greco Middle School Student Garden Design Winners Announced
The Temple Terrace Community Gardens (TTCG) is pleased to announce the student winners of the community garden design competition.
The garden design competition was organized and hosted in January 2013 by TTCG in partnership with Ms. Elizabeth Heli, Greco STEM lead teacher. Students in Greco Middle school’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program submitted their designs for evaluation by a community panel of judges in early January. Joe Parr, Director of Horticulture, Busch Gardens; Autumn Balthazor, master gardener and lead science teacher at Benito Middle School; and TTCG members Mike Pont and Steve McBride judged the designs.
The competition was hosted by TTCG to engage Greco Middle School students in the experience of designing a community garden. Everyone interested in volunteering to help set up TTCG’s Plot 3 on school property (between the track and the school) is invited to attend a meeting Saturday, March 9, 2013, 2PM at Café Kili, 5731 E Fowler Ave., Temple Terrace, FL. At this meeting we’ll review the student designs for ideas to use in Plot 3 and organize our efforts to create this new garden.
The Temple Terrace Community Gardens (TTCG) offer public garden space where friends and families can enjoy time together in a safe, healthy, creative community of caring people. New members who garden or are interested in learning are encouraged to join. TTCG has two active sites with a third in the planning stages. Plot 1, located behind Riverhills Elementary School is a large communal plot shared by members and students. Plot 2, located in Riverhills Park, offers members individual garden sites. Plot 3 is being planned to serve the North Temple Terrace community and Greco Middle School students. Member benefits include community composting, classes, cooking, nutrition, celebrations, planting parties, harvest parties, crop contests, and more as requested by members. Workdays typically occur on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings at Plot 1 & 2. Prospective members are encouraged to stop by for a chat and to join in the gardening fun. Anyone interested in talking with TTCG members directly can visit our Facebook page. For general information visit the website www.templeterracecommunitygarden.com.
