All eyes in Brazil will be aimed at Rio de Janeiro.
By: www.AboutBrasil.com Tonight the merry mayhem of the Carnival weekend will have its grand finale at the official Samba Parade. This is a contest in which the best twelve samba schools of Rio de Janeiro participate. The parade is being held in a designated stadium, the ‘Sambódromo’, in the central suburb of Santo Cristo. The grandstands of the Sambódromo, which is in fact an 800 meter/ 2625 ft. lane, can hold up to 90,000 spectators... The finals are both on Sunday and Monday nights, six samba schools per night. Each group parades between 65 and 80 minutes from start to finish (disqualification lurks when arriving outside this schedule) and consists of about 4,000 participants. A jury of artists, intellectuals and other celebrities will pick a winner. Important things are the originality of the allegory, the music, the choreography, the outfits, the enthusiasm and of course the cheers from the audience the respective samba school receives. The prize for the winning samba school is around US$ 1 million, so the stakes are high. Speaking of money, ticket prizes are very steep, from around US$ 60 to US$ 850 for the best seats. Spectators can best arrive late to find discounts with scalpers; most people only come to see 3 or 4 samba schools anyway. The Samba Parade is taken very seriously by the Cariocas (Rio dwellers) and it has been dominating the national news for the last few weeks. An entire nation is very excited for the results of the Samba Parade 2013, tonight at the Greatest Show on Earth! About us: www.AboutBrasil.com is your starting point in Brazil.
