By: Tatung Co, Shaspa Combining the broad know-how of Tatung in smart metering, household appliances and systems design with Shaspa’s broad experience in service delivery, embedded software and facilities management, the effort will provide new offerings in reference designs for the Smart Home. This collaboration builds on a project, demonstrated during CES 2013, among IBM, STMicroelectronics and Shaspa to tap cloud and mobile computing for manufacturers and service providers for the Smart Home. The IBM/ST/Shaspa approach highlighted innovative ways for consumers to manage and interact with their entertainment systems and important home functions, using multiple user interfaces, including voice recognition and physical gestures. The Tatung and Shaspa agreement is a further step to promote this initiative. The solution will be shown at the eWorld Conference in Essen, Germany (5. – 7. February 2013). “Joining forces with Tatung is a milestone in our effort to globally position smart home solutions in the key markets. The combined skills of being able to produce rapid prototypes in both Hard- and Software to the customer will enable much faster turnaround times for pilot project,” said Oliver Goh, Founder and CEO of Shaspa. “As a result of this joint effort we will shortly be able to make a series of reference kits available. Customers will greatly benefit from these pre-configured Smart Home Pilot Kits.” The products developed through the Tatung-Shaspa effort, to be implemented by Tatung using a variety of platforms and reference designs developed by STMicroelectronics, are designed to leverage the popular HomePlug[1] powerline communication (PLC) protocols and hybrid networks[2]. Illustrating the huge range of creative possibilities open to smart-home equipment designers, one products is an innovative Smart Home Service Gateway PMG-A01 consolidating home area networking (HAN), personal area networking (PAN), and Shaspa software solutions in a single unit. “ST recognizes the smart home is key to enabling the Internet of Things to provide energy saving, security, comfort and convenience and our broad product and technology portfolio, along with our partnering expertise, will allow us to contribute to accelerate its development,” Shaspa’s cloud-based Service Delivery Framework and its embedded modules will allow service providers and system integrators to rapidly build prototypes. The Shaspa Bridge has everything necessary for smart instrumentation. It can monitor and control the environment in any physical space and implement features required for configuring devices and for the display and manipulation of data. It also takes on the responsibility for reliably passing data to outside interfaces such as the Shaspa Portal, social networking sites and a host of applications. “We are very pleased to join with Shaspa and cooperate with them to deliver integrated smart-home solutions,” said W. Y. Lin, President of Tatung. “Tatung has embraced the smart home and the Internet of Things, and we want to work with strategic partners like Shaspa to accelerate the vision. Shaspa’ Live demonstrations of the technology can be seen at the eWorld in Essen (5.-7. February 2013 at Booth 07-110-17) About Tatung (www.tatung.com) As the company that best represents Taiwan by media’s choice, Tatung Company has three business groups covering power related business, consumer electronics, and system integration.
