-- The Michigan Business and Professional Association (MBPA) and its sister organization the Michigan Food and Beverage Association (MFBA) applaud Governor Rick Snyder’s announcement earlier today supporting implementation of the Medicaid expansion prescribed as part of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
“We are very pleased to see that the Governor fully supports the federal provisions that will make health care available to an estimated 400,000 Michigan residents who meet the program guidelines,”
said Jennifer Kluge, MBPA-MFBA President and CEO. “Expanding health care programs to those in need is good for business, the state economy and its citizens,” she continued.
The expansion of Medicaid provided for by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) enacted in 2010 is the way that people who could not otherwise afford health insurance will now qualify for coverage. It is funded by the federal government through 2017 with the federal government’s share gradually declining to 90 percent, thus placing the remaining funding liability on the state to make up the difference after that point.
Bonnie Bochniak, Vice President of Government Relations for MBPA-MFBA, added, “Michigan needs to ensure that we are providing needed health care benefits to all citizens, individuals and businesses alike.” She noted that while the MBPA and MFBA did not support the PPACA, “we need to move forward together and guarantee that our state reaps the benefits of this industry changing law.”
