Feb. 5, 2013 - PRLog -- ExecutiveGov covered a number of important news stories in the past week concerning the federal government.

This release will look at two of the most important articles that were published, specifically the government executives that were focused on in the pieces.

The first piece covered comments that Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter made in regards to the looming sequester.

He said it is looking likely that the automatic budget cuts will occur on March 1.

The Pentagon's first step will be to let go the Defense Department's 46,000 temporary workers by mid-February.

Pentagon managers have a Feb. 8 deadline to give Carter a report on how they would handle the budget cuts, including how many temporary workers they would have to let go

In another article published on the government news website, Army General Martin Dempsey commented on what the rest of 2013 could look like if sequestration occurs.

“We have to absorb $52 billion when you count the effects of both sequestration and the continuing resolution in the last half of the year,” Dempsey said.

Dempsey made the comment during a joint interview with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on NBC’s “Meet the Press."

The general also said civilian employees will lose two days per pay period (http://www.executivegov.com/2013/02/kathleen-hicks-no-dec...) if they are furloughed, totaling a 20 percent pay cut for the rest of the year.
