Jan. 29, 2013 - PRLog -- No, that wasn't a typo. Community Presbyterian Church of San Juan Capistrano has been collecting cans of soup for our community food bank, Family Assistance ministries (FAM). Donations came from our congregation and the kindergarten and preschool (children and parents).

Our initial goal was for five-hundred cans by Super Bowl Sunday. We have far exceeded that number!

The cans will be presented to FAM on Sunday, February 10th for distribution to the homeless and needy in southern Orange County.  Mary Purdue, Executive Director of FAM, will join us during our 9:00 worship service on that date, and the official presentation will occur between services (at approximately 10:00 a.m.).

Partnering together on this effort, the congregation and school have shown enormous support for the cause. However, we are not alone in participating in this project.  Since its inception by a Presbyterian youth group in Columbia, South Carolina in 1990, the idea of collecting soup, other foods and money to feed the needy during Super Bowl season has grown to a nationwide effort with churches, schools, youth groups, Sunday schools, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, businesses and sports teams throughout the country joining in the effort.

We are proud to be a part of this worthwhile endeavor.
