In 1958 Alan worked as an aircraft fitter in Luton, in his spare time he called on factories selling tools and equipment from a wheelbarrow. He progressed initially to a market stall before later that year opening his first shop supplying mainly Government surplus tools and equipment. In 1962 Alan moved to Darlington finding premises in Clifton Road. The company has now moved onto the 2nd Wadkins generation.
