Landfill Odors - a Nuisance or Possible Health Threat Discussed in New Online Video

Jan. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- Today, the IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates announced the release of another online video to help educate the public about issues that may impact their health.  Their latest educational video discusses landfill odors and if they are a nuisance or a possible health threat in some circumstances.

Landfill gases are formed when buried wastes decompose due to microorganisms or volatizes as the waste changes from a liquid or solid to a vapor. These microbial and chemical processes create gases that can often be detected in areas surrounding a landfill.  

“Most of the time these odors are unlikely to pose any serious health hazards and are often considered a nuisance, but certain gases in high enough concentrations could pose a health concern under certain circumstances,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network and the new public outreach video.  “Landfill gases at high concentrations may cause people to experience eye irritation, headaches, nausea, and nose and throat irritation. People with existing respiratory issues may be especially sensitive to these effects.  If high concentrations of landfill gases enter a building under certain extreme circumstances they may also present an explosion or even an asphyxiation hazard.  We hope this video helps to educate people about landfill odors and gases.”
