Authors Begin Jumping on $1 Billion Audiobook Market Bandwagon

As digital media formats continue their march to bigger market shares, authors large and small hire voice talent or build studios in their closets to cash in on the growing audio book market.

Jan. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- January 27th, Corpus Christi, Texas – Authors such as Tina Fey, Deepak Chopra and Seth Goden have turned their bestselling books into audio books and now find themselves at the top of the audiobook bestseller lists.  And now with the opening of online marketplaces like Audible, authors don’t need large production budgets or professional voice talent to create audio books.  In fact many use a closet full of clothes, a decent microphone, a chair and their laptops.

In a 2011 survey by the OECD American's spend a little over 4 hours per week commuting to and from work.  Many people are using this time to listen to audiobooks and even more listen during work outs, walking their dogs or doing busy work around the house.

Something else of interest is that many who purchase audiobooks are avid readers themselves and are looking to fit more reading into their schedule without having to sit down and read.  It also helps that money of the customers in this marketplace are more affluent as well.

"I believe authors have a ground floor opportunity when it comes to breaking into the audio book market" says Daniel Hall creator of the Real Fast Audio Book program. "Thanks to a market full of good microphones and other easy to use technologies, now an author of any size can sell their audio books online.

Thanks to programs such as Apple’s iTunes and Amazon’s push into the audio market with the purchase Audible in 2008 to the sum of $300 million, it appears that the titans of the electronic industry see the growth and viability of audio books as well.  In a press release by the Audio Publishers Association it stated that the average salary of the download audiobook listener is $84,000 and that younger demographics are also starting to show a preference for the digital format as well.

The audio book industry is already sizable at an estimated worth of over $1 billion a year and now with companies such as Amazon and Apple getting into the act it appears that audio book sales are going to be growing for many years to come.
