Iceland Puts the Freeze on Weight Discrimination
NAAFA proudly supports Iceland’s adoption of a new constitution which includes body weight as part of their protected classes.
If this legislation passes, Iceland will be the first country to protect individuals from weight discrimination. This action could lead to other countries taking similar steps. We commend Sigrun Danielsdottri, an Icelandic psychologist, who is fighting to include weight to the protected classes in Iceland’s proposed constitution. Research has shown that weight discrimination and bias exists and has devastating results, especially in employment settings. Some of the organizations who have offered their endorsement of Iceland’s proposed legislation are linked below:
NAAFA urges other organizations to join us in support of Iceland’s effort to strive for Equality At Every Size™!
Founded in 1969, NAAFA is a non-profit human rights organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for fat people. NAAFA works to eliminate discrimination based on body size and provide fat people with the tools for self-empowerment through public education, advocacy, and member support.
