At-Risk Children In New Orleans Win A Super Experience

At-risk children in New Orleans are getting a chance to participate in championship week festivities thanks to a new partnership.

Jan. 23, 2013 - PRLog -- The winner of professional football’s biggest game may not be decided in New Orleans until February 3rd, but one group of local children already feels like champions. Crescent Guardian, Inc., a New Orleans-based security firm, is working with the local chapter of the Children’s Defense Fund, a children’s advocacy group founded in 1973, to give at-risk children in New Orleans a chance to participate in championship week festivities.

Crescent Guardian donated 50 NFL Experience tickets and food vouchers to the children of the local Children’s Defense Fund, along with flag football equipment for the program so children can enjoy the feeling throughout the year. The NFL Experience is a temporary theme park operated by the National Football League during the week of the Super Bowl. It is a combination of interactive attractions and special events, such as throwing a football for accuracy, simulating a run to the goal line while being restrained by a bungee cord, making field goal attempts, and receiving autographs by current and former players.

The Children’s Defense Fund champions policies and programs that lift children out of poverty; protect them from abuse and neglect; and ensure their access to health care, quality education and a moral and spiritual foundation.

“Growing up can be difficult for any child if the love they need isn’t there. But the CDF makes sure it always is,” said Marian Pierre, CEO of Crescent Guardian. “We wanted to help their children have the opportunity to be a part of such a significant event in New Orleans history.”

The children receiving the tickets are part of the CDF Freedom Schools® programs, a free summer and after-school initiative with literacy-based learning experiences that integrate conflict resolution and social action in programs that promote social, cultural, and historical awareness. The program, which is funded through grants, donations and public support, works to build confidence and a sense of self-worth in scholars while preventing summer learning loss, which is the biggest contributor to the growing achievement gap.

“Our children are absolutely thrilled to receive the tickets,” said Mary Joseph, director of CDF New Orleans. “It’s a nice reward for all their hard work and will be a great experience for them.”
