The TRENDnet TPL-401E2K was compared with powerlines from D-Link, Netgear, On Networks and Power Ethernet in a benchmark test. The Sunday Times put the powerline units through their paces with several tests to determine which was the best for speed, simplicity, connecting to your TV, value and tidyness.

Powerline units use existing electrical lines to network devices to the internet. The adaptors plug into household power sockets and auto-connect to each other over an encrypted signal with no CD installation required. They are also used in conjunction with Wi-Fi networks to extend network connectivity to areas with poor or no wireless coverage.  
The Sunday Times review rated the powerline units on the appearance of the product, size of the adaptor, connection speed, installation process and some of the grueling tests included sending large files, streaming HD content and watching online services such as BBC iPlayer and Netflix. The TPL-401E2K HD movie streaming trial found that the movie downloaded ‘without any stuttering, buffering or other hitches’. The Sunday Times overall evaluated the product as doing very well for its price.
