Transgender Parents Finally Have an Education Resource for The Children in Their Lives

Teaching the next generation that trans* men and women are individuals who live lives just like every other person is imperative to abolishing transgender discrimination and bigotry. “My New Daddy” aims to bridge the gap between gender normative children and transgender males in society. By following the son of a transman as he explains the steps of the transition, children are able to see the love the pair has for one another, and gain a basic understanding of the transition itself. The wonderfully illustrated pictures give life to the story, and explain the words for younger readers.

The need for this type of literature is apparent when you look at the statistics surrounding transgender people. According to the Transgender Law and Policy Institute, an estimated 2 to 5% of the population is transgender (i.e., experience some degree of gender dysphoria). Recent statistics from the Netherlands indicate that about 1 in 12,000 natal males undergo sex-reassignment and about 1 in 34,000 natal females. A United States nationwide survey of bias-motivated violence against LGBT people from 1985 to 1998 found that incidents targeting transgender people accounted for 20% of all murders and about 40% of all police-initiated violence. Ms. Mossiano is the author of “My New Mommy”, which has been featured on several blogs and a radio talk show for its revolutionary style of incorporating full color pictures and accompanying words to increase children’s understanding of MtF transgender women. She wrote “My New Mommy” when she realized she had no outlet to explain her transition to the children in her life. After it was written, one review went viral on Tumblr and she saw an outcry for a similar book for FtM transgender men, and set out to write it. “My New Daddy” was born, and again illustrated by her partner, Sage Mossiano in the same style as “My New Mommy” was illustrated. It is only available in electronic format as of right now, but if there is enough of a demand, print copies will be made available.
