Ukrainians on the Cote d'Azur.

Jan. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- Nice has always attracted prominent cultural figures, and Ukrainians are no exception. Perhaps the most famous Ukrainian Nicoise is Marie Bashkirtseff, artist, author of famous diaries and one of the first French feminists among other things. The event, while paying homage to the past, also introduces new Ukrainians in Nice.  

Organised by the non-profit foundation Matrix Orange, the programme is composed of various events that reflect different aspects of modern Ukrainian culture. These are the exhibition of the Ukrainian art group Absinth Reality, RITO fashion show and the opening of the art exhibition by the Ukrainian artist Kateryna Kosianenko, as well as Frederic Rey’s play Marie Bashkirtseff: Journal In Time.

The programme’s central literary event that opened up recent renaissance of the Ukrainian prose and its popularity in and outside of Ukraine, is the literary assembly in Bibliothèque Louis Nucéra where British-Dutch publishing house Glagoslav Publications introduced an exclusive book release of the English language edition of Sarabande of Sara’s Band by Larysa Denysenko, translated from the Ukrainian by Svitlana Bednazh and Michael M. Naydan. The novel’s peculiarity is in providing the reader with a good deal of insight into the everyday lives, loves and tribulations of Ukrainians today. The author attended the event, offering participants an opportunity to ask questions and receive autographed copies of the book.

Glagoslav Publications is a publishing house specialising in classic and modern literary works from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Denysenko’s novel is not the first in line of many Ukrainian editions brought by Glagoslav to the English language book market. Last year Glagoslav published Maria Matios’s saga Hardly Ever Otherwise and Irene Rozdobudko’s thriller The Lost Button. In the near future three new Ukrainian titles are expected: Depeche Mode by Serhiy Zhadan, An Anthology Of New Ukrainian Women Prose Writers complied by Michael Naydan and a special edition of Taras Shevchenko’s Kobzar translated by Peter Fedynsky.
