Did you know Valentia was chosen as the site for the first transatlantic telegraph cable. When the connection was made in 1858, it put Caherciveen in direct contact with New York, The telegraph station operated until 1966.
Portmagee connects to Valentia with a bridge and overlooks the southside of the island from the mainland. During the Summer Months, its small pier comes to life with boats embarking on the crossing to the Skellig Islands.
