Apollo Safety Responds to Nationwide Influenza Activity

Jan. 14, 2013 - PRLog -- The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 47 states now have widespread influenza activity and with the five deaths and over 700 cases of the virus reported in the city of Boston thus far into the flu season, Mayor Tom Menino has declared a public health emergency.  According to Menino, this is the worst flu season the city has seen since 2009 and “people should take the threat of flu seriously.”   While the flu season is expected to last into March and possibly April, the Mayor and the city are advising people to take the necessary precautions to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Because the flu spreads mainly from person to person via coughing, sneezing, or by touching surfaces that someone with the virus has touched, it is important to stay home if you are experiencing flu symptoms with a fever.  The influenza virus can infect other people one day before symptoms are present and for up to five to seven days after becoming sick.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in addition to getting a flu vaccine, there are some preventative measures that can be taken to help prevent the spread of the influenza virus.  Routinely washing hands with soap and water, or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, cleaning frequently touched surfaces such as phones, keyboards, and doorknobs, and making sure the home and workplace have adequate supplies of tissues, soap, paper towels, alcohol-based sanitizer and disinfectant wipes are all steps to be taken to help stop the spread of germs that cause influenza.
