Are We Becoming Addicted To Technology?

Magician Paul Gertner explores the darker side of our digital world with his new one-man show BRAINDROPS: Mind Reading, Magic and iPads.

Jan. 11, 2013 - PRLog -- We all know technology is changing the way we live.  But is it also changing the way we think?  Will the next smart phone you purchase be able to read your thoughts?  These are just a few of the questions Paul Gertner explores in his new one-man show BRAINDROPS: Mind Reading, Magic & iPads, which opens in Pittsburgh at the Grey Box Theater, in PIttsburgh February 1-9th 2013.

BRAINDROPS premiered at the prestigious Piccolo Spoleto Theater Festival in Charleston, South Carolina, in June of last year to rave reviews.  The Charleston City paper called BRAINDROPS  “An original blend of magic and technology…hilarious.”  The Post and Courier said:  “He is preaching the importance of awareness…nothing could be more relevant.”  After sold out performances in Charleston and at the famous Magic Castle in Hollywood this will be Pittsburgh’s first chance to see this topical new show by Pittsburgh’s own master of magic and illusion.

Paul Gertner is well know to Pittsburgh theater audiences for his sleight-of-hand show Ten Fingers, A Play of Magic and for his corporate performances, but BRAINDROPS is something totally different.  As Paul explains, “I’ve been working on this show about sixty to seventy hours a week over the past two years.  The minute the iPAD came out and I held one in my hands, I thought, THIS is pure magic.  It was like the creative side of my brain exploded… and what came out surprised even me.”  You might want to keep this quote in mind when you are watching the final act in show.

BRAINDROPS is an entertaining and magical look at new technology, challenging the audience to ask the question:  What is real and what is not?  But BRAINDROPS is not all fun and games.  In BRAINDROPS Paul Gertner has created a number of new theater pieces that walk the line between the darker side of our technology obsession and the importance of finding a balance between technology and real world human relationships. It delivers a powerful message about topical subjects like social media responsibility and a very memorable message about the dangers of texting and driving.  As the Charleston Post and Courier said:  “BRAINDROPS will make you think…twice.”   It’s also interactive so, bring your cell phones and get ready to turn them on…in BRAINDROPS everyone gets involved in the show.  When asked to describe the show Paul said: “Let’s just say you are going to see things done with an iPads and iPhones that Steve Jobs never even imagined?” But is what you see real or just an illusion?   Well that’s for you to decide.

Pittsburgh resident Paul Gertner is recognized as one of the leading sleight-of-hand magicians in the world today. He is a three-time World Champion Magician, and has been named the Close-Up Magician of the Year from the Magic Castle in Hollywood twice.  He has performed in 25 different countries, been feature in two TEDx talks, at The Presidential Inauguration and performed on many television shows including multiple appearances on NBC’s The Tonight Show, HBO, CBS, ABC and his favorite TV appearance on Mister Rogers Neighborhood.
