Jan. 8, 2013 - PRLog -- Oldcastle Precast Completes I-15 Stormwater Conveyance Project Using Precast Concrete Box Culverts

JANUARY 2013 : Davis County, UT  -  Oldcastle Precast supplied over 3,100 linear feet of precast concrete box culvert for (UDOT) Utah Department of Transportation’s I-15 major storm drain master improvement plan at Barton Creek, in Davis County, Utah. The precast box culverts were used as part of the upgrade to existing infrastructure so that storm events could be handled effectively. This project involved the construction of a new box culvert to convey the newly separated stormwater into the Great Salt Lake, which is not far from the freeway crossing.

UDOT usually does not allow for open cut construction of utilities under major roadways. However due to the project conflicts with other utilities, railroad crossings, and cover requirements open cutting a box culvert was approved by UDOT.  A precast box culvert allowed a design where the planned flow for Barton Creek could be contained in a single 9’ x 4’ box culvert in the area of I-15. The I-15 crossing included 165 linear feet of 9’ x 4’ box culvert with another 520 feet being used under the 500 West off ramp.

Oldcastle Precast of Ogden, UT designed, engineered and manufactured 110 lineal feet of 10' x 5' concrete box culvert; 3,065 lineal feet of 9' x 4' concrete box culvert (Including 165 feet across I-15 and 520 feet through the I-15 500 West off ramp) and several junction/outlet structures along the I-15 and UTA Frontrunner corridors for the Davis County Barton Creek Project

Quick installation of the precast box culvert sections was critical. Based on the construction window that was approved by UDOT, it typically took several hours to set up traffic control and signing to gradually reduce the number of lanes on southbound I-15.  Excavation for the box culvert could not typically start until midnight. The box culvert sections were then installed, backfilled and the surface asphalted (and cooled) so that full southbound traffic could be allowed by 7:00 a.m.

The project was finished within UDOT’s timeframe and the end result was an upgraded stormwater conveyance across I-15 with most of the traveling public unaware that the project occurred.

UDOT was very pleased with the coordination efforts of all involved and the quality of the project.
