Aviation safety has been a large concern since 2006 when ICAO mandated all countries to ensure their airlines, airports, flight schools, aviation maintenance and fixed based operators implement formal aviation safety management systems. Since 2007, NorthWest Data Solutions in Anchorage, Alaska has been working in the aviation safety software market producing Web based aviation SMS products for airlines and airports.

Three hundred employees was the average size of company the NWDS had sold aviation safety management software. The national airline of ten thousand marked a highlight for the Anchorage, Alaska software company. (http://www.nwds-ak.com)

Aviation safety software must be developed to the highest standards and satisfy regulatory requirements. Details of SMS Pro Web based airline safety software can be found at http://www.asms-pro.com. As of the end of 2012, more than 550 companies have used the Web based aviation safety management system software.

The objective of aviation safety management systems is to provide a structured, business-like management approach to mitigate and control safety risks in operations, whether the aviation service providers are airlines, airports, maintenance or flight schools. Effective aviation safety management considers company complexity and the specific structures and processes related tothe safety of its operations.

From a layperson's perspective, SMS can be generally interpreted as applying a quality management approach to mitigate hazards and safety risks. Similar to other aviation management functions, safety management requires planning, organizing, implementing, communicating and providing direction. Aviation SMS implementation begins with acquiring top management support and setting the organizational safety policy. Safety policies define the generic principles upon which the organization's SMS is built and operated.

NorthWest Data Solutions is a privately held company that started business in Anchorage, Alaska in 2003. Their core competency is developing enterprise level Web applications for military defense, financial and engineering industries.
