The Novel “People In The Curtains” May Be Pulled From Shelf

Citing censorship issues, Featherwood Publishing is considering pulling M.T.Graves’ novel "People in the Curtains" from their shelves until further notice.

Jan. 7, 2013 - PRLog -- Even though the controversial book People in the Curtains has a PG rating, some critics think it goes too far. “The use of profanity, violence and sex seem to be entirely inappropriate for a Young Adult novel. It crosses the line,” stated one such critic from Writer’s Digest.
Seeking a response from the author, Featherwood Publishing interviewed Mr. Graves at his home.

Graves- “I don’t know what to tell you. The book has very few references to the sexual aspects of the crime scene and the only characters that swear are the bad guys. If bad guys can’t swear and cause trouble, what can they do?”

FP- “Is that why you rated the book a PG, because you knew it had these issues? Should a stronger rating be necessary, perhaps an R rating? Perhaps you could censor some of your words or actions?”

Graves- “Most writers don’t even rate their books. I only did it to inform parents that some of the content was inappropriate for younger readers. Anyone over thirteen should already understand what rape is and they probably know several swear words themselves. The teenagers I know occasionally use profanity.”

FP- “So you have no intentions of raising the PG rating to an R or censoring the book.”

Graves- “No. I’ve had a good response with this book as it is. If people are offended by an explanation of a sexual crime, then how do they watch the evening news. Don’t their kids watch the news? Murders, muggings and sexual crimes are all over the news these days, are these people as upset with reality as they are with a fictitious book? If delicate readers don’t want to read about indelicate things, then don’t pick up a book rated PG. And don’t watch the news. That’s my advice to them.”

The owners of Featherwood Publishing will decide in the next few days what decision they’ll make concerning the prospects of the censorship of this book. People in the Curtains may be pulled from their shelves. Graves’ second book Life Returned will still be offered.
