Wood Burning Fireplace Retro-fit Technology

Approved by EPA for Partnership Program

January 4, 2013 -Corona, CA – Earth’s Flame is the best rated emission retrofit system with the lowest emissions of any retrofit tested included in the burn wise program.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency website, www.epa.gov/burnwise “Burn Wise is a partnership program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that emphasizes the importance of burning the right wood, the right way, in the right wood-burning appliance to protect your home, health, and the air we breathe.”

Fireplace industry experts estimate that there could be as many as 38 million wood burning fireplaces in the U.S., and approximately 3 million in Southern California alone. While the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) has taken needed steps to reduce increased pollution from new housing sources, existing wood burning fireplaces will be addressed this year with the “No Burn” section of rule #445. Up till now, there has not been a reliable method to reduce emissions from existing fireplaces when consumers want to use their wood fireplaces.

Right now the technology exists to reduce emissions from these wood-burning fireplaces by 78%, while giving homeowners a 115% increase in radiant heat. Safety features include reducing creosote accumulation, which lessens potential for chimney fires.

Earth’s Flame is the only “green” solution for removing harmful particulates from wood smoke, and won the Hearth and Home Green Award in 2010. Working with the EPA and the Hearth Products Association, Earth’s Flame was developed and engineered to reduce harmful emissions by up to 78%. This is the New Eco-Friendly system for burning wood in fireplaces. After two years of review, the EPA has moved to amend their current voluntary fireplace program to qualify retrofit devices, such as Earth’s Flame. The goal of the EPA, and many states, is to improve air quality by providing a lower emission option for homeowners who prefer a wood fire in colder winter months. Additional benefits include an increase in fireplace draft by 76%, and decrease in carbon monoxide by 60%.

Families that have used their fireplaces for years, even if only for a few special evenings a year, need a solution that easily installs into existing fireplaces. While many families are taking advantage of the SCAQMD program for gas logs, this program doesn’t address the thousands of homeowners who remain committed to real wood fires.  Including fireplace retrofits in this program, or in a separate program of their own, will offer more options to homeowners, and result in lower total emissions levels from this source.

This winter, the first winter of the mandatory enforcement will bring a lot of attention to this issue, which is why this is the time to support EPA recognized fireplace retrofits.  One major retailer alone sells 250,000, 10 to15 pound bundles of firewood each year, and based on that amount of wood used in this air basin each winter, the district is about to confront many, many families who will not see gas logs as a viable solution, but will look for solutions which reduce emissions, while still allowing them to use their fireplaces.  Families approach the issue of fireplaces on a very personal level.  For many, the district’s gas log program is a wonderful solution. But for other families, who are committed wood burners, the district needs to encourage a solution that addresses their desires.  In the case of the most serious wood burning households, for every 1,000 homes burning a ½ cord of wood per year, the Earth’s Flame retrofit could reduce their total emissions by 5.5 tons per year.

With the cold weather approaching, families can now replace their existing cast iron grate with Earth’s Flame fireplace system and double their radiant heat. This retrofit is the answer to ensure that there is reliable heat in homes.  This stainless steel system increases radiate heat up to 115% compared to a standard cast iron grate. Furthermore, Earth’s Flame produces up to twenty times more radiant heat than a wax fire log, and five times more than a gas log set. Even if there are power outages or no gas, Earth’s Flame will still increase the radiant heat by 40%, so it is the solution to heat homes.

Installation is easy for the homeowner. Simply go to www.earthsflame.com and measure the fireplace according to the “Will It Fit” document on the site. Earth’s Flame can be used in conjunction with gas and the Blue Flame Log Lighter to burn a hotter, more efficient fire. This process removes the harmful particulates found in fireplace smoke, resulting in much cleaner, greener, emissions.

Canterbury Enterprises, is a 55-year family owned business, and is the founder of the Blue Flame Log Lighters and gas valves for fireplaces. Homeowners can benefit by installing the Blue Flame log lighter that uses gas to ignite their firewood without kindling and paper. It will even ignite wet firewood and will produce a hotter fire. These products are proudly made in the USA.

Together with the SCAQMD, Earth’s Flame is dedicated to reducing the harmful emissions from existing wood burning fireplaces.  Enabling and encouraging the use of fireplace retrofits, will help the district meet our region’s clean air goals.
