-- BIG ARTS presents several dance performances this season, including Irish Step and Hip Hop dance group Hammerstep (Jan. 19) and Koresh Dance Company’s “Twenty Years” (Feb. 9).
Created and directed by two-time World Champion Irish step dancer Garrett Coleman and former lead of Riverdance
Jason Oremus, Hammerstep made its official U.S. preview in May 2011 with two performances at the Lincoln Center Atrium alongside Grammy Award Nominee Dave Eggar. More recently, the company performed at the prestigious Palace Theatre on London’s West End.
Oremus and Coleman, with their group of tap and hip-hop dancers, are attempting to break the preconceptions of Irish dance by fusing it with other dance forms, popular culture and comedy. This groundbreaking show integrates traditional Irish step, tap and hip hop dance forms and presents them through cutting edge choreography, lights and sound in a way that reinvents the typical dance show experience.
Hammerstep helped organize an Irish dance flash mob with the cast of Riverdance
for St. Patrick’s Day 2011 in Sydney, Australia, where 150 dancers staged an “outbreak”
of Irish dance. The event went viral, and gained more than two million hits on YouTube within a year.
General seating: $42, Loge: $47, Student: $15. Koresh Dance Company’s performance is 7:30 p.m. Saturday, February 9, at BIG ARTS Schein Performance Hall.
