By: Miller Family YMCA of Newbury Park Model UN is a statewide program that brings middle schoolers together to learn about other cultures. "Each YMCA forms a delegation that then selects a country to represent," says Jessie Bringelson, Miller Y membership, family and teen director. "The delegates learn about the country and the issues that are important to its people. Besides their new-found awareness of cultures from around the world, delegates receive training and coaching in public speaking and conflict resolution." Delegates in California meet in March at Camp Roberts near Paso Robles for training. In May, over 800 delegates from around California meet in Orange County for an annual conference where they debate and establish policies, treaties and resolutions, focusing on international issues much like the real UN.
