An Activate Simi Valley kick-off, health fair and first weigh-in will take place at the Simi Valley Family YMCA on January 10.
By: Simi Valley Family YMCA The eight-week program encourages participants to make healthy life changes, in part, through weekly confidential weigh-ins taking place every Friday. Participants will also receive nutrition and exercise materials and can attend talks from prominent health professionals. Last year, Dorothy Ae lost the most weight of all of the more than 800 participants-- Ae started walking a few blocks a day, eventually building up her distance to about four miles daily. Since then, Ae has joined the Y and hits the gym to stay in shape. "There really isn't any excuse. The challenge to the entire community really motivated me to be a part of it,” Groups and businesses are encouraged to participate. Confidential individual results will be automatically calculated as part of the total group's weight loss. Last year, participating members of the Simi Valley Unified School District lost over 140 pounds and City of Simi Valley staff averaged 3.2 pounds of weight loss per participant. Activate Simi Valley runs from January 10 through March 1. To register prior to the January 10 kick-off, go to www.activatesimivalley.org. For more information, call the Y at 805-583-5338.
