Jersey Express Fall to Staten Island, for 1st Loss of the Season
Fall to Division Rival 119-101, drop to 2-1 - Ticket Specials for the Remainder of the Season
Staten Island got off to a quick start, running out to a 9-0 lead to start the game. The Express missed its first 5 shots, and played catch-up from the start. Staten Island’s Mike Collins opened up hot from the 3pt line, going 3 for 4 in the 1st, while Mike Gordon matched his effort. Jamal Webb, and Justin Hamilton had strong 1st quarters for the Express, keeping them in the game, after a blistering shooting start by the Vipers.
Teshawn Brown had a huge 2nd qtr for the Vipers, with 10pts, shooting jumper after jumper. Devon Young had 9 in the qtr for the Express, completing 2 strong driving layups, while getting fouled and completing the 3pt plays. At the half, the Express trailed 48-59.
In the 3rd qtr, the Express made a push, led by Michael Edghill off the bench to score 9pts, going 3/3 from the 3pt line, and power forward William McDonough’s 7 in the qtr, making several strong post moves, to nullify the vipers strong post game. Express forward Charles Smith had made his mark on the defensive end, with several key blocks. He led the charge, with his rebounding, collecting 5 in the qtr.
The Express missed 7 layups in the qtr, and had several opportunities to close the double-digit lead. Rob Lewin’s alley-oop play, and Karem Collins shooting kept the Express at bay. The Vipers took advantage of the Express turnovers, to run out for easy buckets. At the end of the 3rd, the score was 86-76 Vipers.
In the 4th, the Express continued its poor shooting with guards Chris Martin going 1 for 8, with 3 turnovers, and Michael Edghill going 0 for 8 from the field. Devon Young had 10 in the qtr for the Express. Angelo LaRoche led the Vipers 4th qtr scoring with 7pts. The Express shot 60% from the free throw line, and with tough shooting nights, from top scorers, Ja’Shon Mixon and William McDonough, it was too much to overcome.
