December 21, 2012 Celebration at AlterNatives

Dec. 13, 2012 - PRLog -- December 21 2012 is a special day for the folks of the Highland Support Project and our sister fair trade store AlterNatives! Not only does this day mark the end of a 13- bak'tun, (5,200 year period) cycle, it is also the 1 k'atun, or 20 year, anniversary of the founding of the Highland Support Project!

20 years ago, Guadalupe Ramirez, an indigenous Maya woman from Tejutla Guatemala, began as a Richmond street vendor in Carytown, selling the weavings of Maya women survivors of political violence as a means to provide them a source of income and social support. Today, the project has grown into a thriving organization that helps raise awareness of indigenous human rights issues through empowerment projects and the coordination of service learning trips that allow 300+ volunteers to experience the beauty of indigenous Maya culture first hand!

Join the Highland Support Project and AlterNatives as we celebrate this exciting day! Share in food, drink, and the musical accompaniment of Berry Bless and the Happy Lucky Combo!
