Top 10 interior design tips from Pallucci Furniture

Attempting a do-it-yourself home decorating project, but not quite sure where to start? The following tips will put you on the right track to creating a living space that is perfect for you.

Dec. 12, 2012 - PRLog -- 1. Keep it simple. Be careful not to over clutter your space. Don’t be afraid to mix unique furniture and accessories — you can arrange anything together if you do it simply. Also, don’t feel like you have to fill each little space. For example, you don’t need to hang artwork on every wall. Some empty space can be good. Too many things, even very nice things, will just seem cluttered.

2. Mix and match. This principle helps if you are working on a shoestring budget. Combine investment pieces with budget pieces. For example, pair an inexpensive sofa with some designer cushions as accent pieces. Otherwise invest in that  leather sofa (http://www.palluccifurniture.ca) you always wanted.

3. Size matters. Choose furniture or other items such as paintings that are big and eye catching. However, don’t forget to think about balance and harmony. A large piece will dwarf a small piece if they are placed right next to each other. Consider grouping smaller items together to balance out the larger ones.

4. Update with accessories. Your bed is the focal point of your bedroom, so refresh the look of your room cost-effectively by updating your bed linen. In the same way, update your living room by changing up your sofa cushions, the rug or even the candles on your coffee table. Use these items to introduce a new colour or change them with the seasons. Consider purchasing the large ticket items such as your bed or sofa in neutrals like brown or beige.

5. Try a rug. Use area rugs to divide a large room and create a small intimate sitting area. If you have an open floor plan that includes the dining room and living area, rugs can create designated areas that make one room feel like two. Rugs can also add coziness to rooms with hardwood flooring.

6. Mirror, mirror on the wall. This simple item can solve some of your biggest design problems. Mirrors can give the illusion of more space and create light in dark areas. Consider using a large mirror as the focal point in your room. Angle your mirror down slightly to reflect a windowed wall or another part of the room rather than the ceiling.

7. Mix colours and textures. A plain room with little variation can be dull. Play with colours and textures to jazz things up a bit. That doesn’t mean you have to steer clear of a simple colour scheme, but vary the textures to soften the harshness of your plain white walls.

8. Hang artwork at eye level. Pictures will add interest to your room, but positioning is important. Hang artwork low enough that you don’t have to crane your neck to see it.

9. Go Green. Add life to your living space by incorporating some plants into your room. Plants work to cool and refresh your home. A well-placed plant can offer a splash of colour to contrast a neutral wall. Get creative and add some hanging plants or go for a low-maintenance potted tree for a corner.

10. Don’t forget storage. Get creative with storage space. A nice bookshelf will do the trick, but why not create a fabric wall pocket that you can store magazines? Build shelves in an otherwise awkward corner or purchase inexpensive wicker storage bins that you can slip under a coffee table.
