Dec. 12, 2012 - PRLog -- McAllen, Texas.  Golden Gate Audubon Society, a non-profit organization supporting conservation in the Bay Area since 1917, announces a South Texas Birding Tour, February 26-March 6, 2013.  The South Texas bird-watching tour is open to members and to the general public. The organization’s travel program coordinator, Pat Kirkpatrick, enthusiastically selected this destination from an array of tours offered by Naturalist Journeys, a specialty birding and nature travel company based in Portal, Arizona.

Kirkpatrick says, “South Texas may be the most exotic winter birding destination in North America, and the chance to also see endangered Whooping Cranes in good number puts this tour over the top.”  The region, known widely among birdwatching and butterfly travel enthusiasts, holds a surprising mix of subtropical species that extend their range just north of the Mexican border.  Golden Gate Audubon selected dates extending into early March as many North American migrants, overwintering in the area, will be present in bright breeding plumage.

More on South Texas Birding Tour, February, 2013 -

Unique habitats such as Tamaulipan Thorn Scrub and lush Sabal Palm groves support populations of some 40 south Texas avian specialties that birding tour participants prize, including Green Jays, Altamira Orioles, Hook-billed Kites, Golden-fronted Woodpeckers, Red-crowned Parrots, Couch’s Kingbirds, Least Grebes, and Plain Chachalacas.

Golden Gate Audubon offers weekly field trips throughout the year. This  nine-day South Texas birdwatching tour goes a step beyond, as  a chance for participants to spend extended time together on a guided birding tour, as they visit a number of sites of the Rio Grande Valley, including the Laguna Atascosa and Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuges, South Padre Island, and several premier Texas State Parks: Estero Llano Grande, Bentsen Rio Grande, and Falcon. They also venture north to include a King Ranch guided birding tour, and time with endangered Whooping Cranes at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and Rockport.  Many of these areas are legendary among birders for consistently attracting unique wildlife.

Golden Gate Audubon offers this new travel opportunity in partnership with the award-winning Ecotravel company Naturalist Journeys.  This in-depth, educational South Texas Birding Tour expands beyond the reach of the organization’s popular local and regional field tours.  Accompanying the group will be one of Naturalist Journey’s expert birds guides, ornithologist and field guide illustrator, Dr. H. Doug Pratt. Dr. Pratt illustrated about a quarter of the illustrations found in the National Geographic Society's Field Guide to the Birds of North America.  Peg Abbott, owner and senior guide for Naturalist Journeys says, “having access to Doug’s encyclopedia knowledge of bird identification is a an experience we are proud to share with Golden Gate Audubon. Doug is a natural teacher, an accomplished musician and just a lot of fun to be with.
For a birder at any level, time with Doug in the field is like taking the car in for a precision tune-up. One can expand their birding skills exponentially, while doing something they love.” With a full group, a field trip leader from Golden Gate Audubon will assist Doug Pratt, and a portion of the birding tour proceeds will go the support their conservation work.

The Golden Gate Audubon South Texas Birding tour is limited to just ten participants so all can learn and share.
