Olson picks up positions in beginning AFR final round but drops back after contact-finishes 10 of 22

American formula pilot Pete Olson picks up multiple positions in beginning of AFR final round but drops back after contact to cross checkered 10th of 22; Finishes in top ten for overall ranking in first full Formula Renault season.

Dec. 11, 2012 - PRLog -- Sunday afternoon, the final Round of the Asia Formula Renault [“AFR”] 2012 Championship took place at Zhuhai International Circuit; Round 8 was also the conclusion of the first full Formula Renault season for BELL helmets/Drift Innovation/ChildFund International pilot Pete Olson.

The American driver had high hopes for the final race after showing steady improvement during the season. However, after getting off to an aggressive start and picking up multiple positions during the first few laps, Olson had slight contact while jockeying for position with another driver, enough to cause Olson to suddenly fall off the pace and drop back to cross the checkered 10th of the 22 drivers. The finish earned Olson 5 points, to place 9th overall for the season in AFR’s premier International Category.

“Unfortunately, because of the mechanical mishaps we had in the beginning of the season, we were out of the possibility of a top finish overall for the season from the outset” said Olson. “But this being my first full season of Formula Renault, the most important thing was that it was a season of learning, of constant improvement in preparation for 2013, when we go for season Champion. There were also significant political factors that I can’t get into, which meant that we didn’t have the best equipment – but that won’t be the case next year, when we go for the series win with the improved change of team to PS Racing - last year’s AFR Championship-winning team, headed by 3-time Formula Renault Champion Pekka Saarinen. I have full confidence in this change of team and know that with the superior equipment and technical side of PS Racing, we will be running up front. I am really looking forward to some solid winter testing and the first race of next season, which is in fact only 12 weeks away. I know what I am capable of when the technical side and equipment are there, and I really think we are going to show something special next March.

I really want to thank my sponsors BELL helmets, Drift Innovation, and ChildFund International for their support and continued belief in my ability and perseverance. I’d also like to thank my family and friends for all the support they’ve given me throughout the season, especially with the various challenges we faced at times. It was their kind words, along with no small amount of Faith, that kept me going, and will keep me going, to enjoy taking on new challenges for next season and beyond.”
