WellSpring Oncology's Bucks for Butts Announces 2012 “Grand Quitter Winner”

Nov. 29, 2012 - PRLog -- John P. Madden, a long-time resident of St. Petersburg and former smoker for 35 years, has not used tobacco since signing the Bucks for Butts pledge earlier this month.

“I have wanted to quit for health reasons and this was the jump start I needed to motivate me to quit,” Madden says now. “I wanted to do this after reading the literature and looking over the quit kits I received at Bucks for Butts, I’m planning on sticking to it.”



To mark November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the Pinellas cancer treatment facility WellSpring Oncology (http://www.wellspringoncology.org)  has been rewarding smokers like Madden around the Bay Area who pledge to quit before Turkey Day with the fourth annual “Bucks for Butts” campaign. Every smoker who turned in an open cigarette pack received a $5 gift card to Publix.


Among those who successfully abstained from smoking, Madden has just been named the 2012 “Grand Quitter Winner” – and received the prize of a kick-start kit to a healthy lifestyle, including recipes for healthy living and utensils to cook healthy meals.

“I found out about the Bucks for Butts program at the YMCA when they posted the flyer and saw it as a sign to finally quit,” says Madden. “I was told quitting smoking cold turkey would be hard to do, and it is.  Being announced publicly as the Grand Quitter Winner is another motivator to make the commitment permanent.”



Through this unique community outreach campaign, the WellSpring Oncology hopes to increase awareness that smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. In fact, smoking is responsible for 87 percent of all cases of the disease. Cigarette smoke contains at least 250 chemicals known to be toxic or carcinogenic.

This pledge to quit is about reducing the risk of many types of cancer, along with heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, respiratory issues, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and infertility in women and low birth-weight in babies.
