Nov. 28, 2012 - PRLog -- Recently a new and innovative technology has been developed to allow for predictable results that benefit a patient’s esthetic and functional expectations!

This revolutionary dental process is referred to as the ‘Same Day Smile’ or ‘Teeth in a Day’ procedure, where a patient can receive a functional and beautiful new smile in just one day! With new research finding patients preferring to maintain their smiles over altering any other part of their bodies, this procedure now has even more merit.

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), the study found that 62% of people would spend their money to maintain the quality of their teeth and also that a “smile may be the secret to attractiveness as we age”. In fact, the survey found that teeth are so important, that maintaining a healthy smile came in over weight loss or any other alterations to the body.

This is why the revolutionary ‘Teeth in a Day’ procedure has become the go-to treatment for patients who want a fast and effective solution

The ‘Teeth in a Day’ procedure utilises implants and teeth that are surgically installed with the aid of computer-generated materials, usually with the help of a local anaesthetic. Imagine – a surgical procedure that often requires no incisions, no sutures and little post-operative swelling or discomfort and takes less than sixty minutes to complete!

Dr. David Gardner is at the forefront of providing this procedure to his patients. He has developed protocols which make the immediate loading of dental implants more efficient, resulting in less time in the chair for his patients as well as a more predictable and esthetic result. He explains the evaluation process:

“The initial clinical evaluation involves understanding the issue, making a diagnosis based on clinical exam, x-rays and discussion of treatment options. I then print a treatment plan to be reviewed by the patient and myself to ensure that we are both happy to proceed.”

The process…

To say that the ‘Teeth in a day’ process takes just a single day is a misstatement. In fact it may take several weeks for the doctor to develop the treatment plan, which will lead to the most optimal outcome. A series of impressions are made in order to develop the proposed final tooth position as well as esthetic considerations i.e. tooth shade, shape, and symmetry.  This is performed meticulously so that when the final prosthesis is inserted it meets the standards of a proper bite and pleasing smile. The procedure is termed “Same day smile” simply because the implants are placed along with a restoration in one day.

Once the proper tooth set up is achieved a radiographic evaluation is performed allowing the Doctor to evaluate the available bone for implant placement.

A Cone beam scan is taken of the jawbone, and is turned into a 3D rendering which can be used in virtual reality software to plan the implant placement and procedure without the patient needing to be present. Dr. Gardner likes to compare this virtual software to that of playing a video game.

Dr. Gardner explains the significance of this 3D image obtained from the CT scan:

“It’s really quite extraordinary - this data that is collected from the 3D image is then sent to a robotics facility where a special surgical guide is then constructed, this guide will assist me with the implant installation.”

The final set of teeth is created in the laboratory prior to the surgical appointment utilizing the surgical guide and the model of the jaws. He then examines the shape and size of the teeth and checks components for accuracy before scheduling the actual surgery.

At this stage the single surgical visit is ready to commence. Due to the fact that treatment has already been carried out on a computer, this appointment is performed in a minimally invasive manner. And because the final restoration has already been fabricated your beautiful new set of teeth are inserted the same day!
